Well RSL fans do get stuck with a Mexican team

If the powers that be from MLS (The don “garber”) had gotten their way this would have been the team that faced off against the MLS All Stars, but just announced today is the first of the Real Salt Lake exhibition matches of 2009. Here is the official announcement:

REAL SALT LAKE TO HOST LEGENDARY MEXICAN SOCCER SQUAD CLUB AMÉRICA ON JULY 11 AT RIO TINTO STADIUM

Real Salt Lake will take on legendary Mexican League side Club América on Saturday, July 11 at Real Salt Lake’s Rio Tinto Stadium home, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.

All Real Salt Lake season ticket holders are assured of their current seats for the July 11 contest vs. Club América and have the ability to purchase additional tickets at a discount.

Ticket prices for the July 11 Real Salt Lake vs. Club América match begin at $18 (with the purchase of the 3-game “Comboleto” package, which includes the 2009 MLS All-Star Game and RSL’s encounters versus Chivas USA on August 26 and the Chicago Fire on September 12). Club America stand-alone prices start at just $20 for Upper Deck seats and continue at $25 in the North and South Goals, $30 in the Corner Flag sections, $40 on the Lower Sidelines and $60 in the Front Row and Midfield areas. Officially named Club de Fútbol América (or C.F. América), is based in Mexico City and owned by Emilio Azcárraga, who owns broadcasting corporation Televisa, making it the richest club in Mexico, and arguably the richest outside Europe. América and its rivals, Chivas de Guadalajara, share not only a long-standing rivalry but the distinction of being the two most successful teams in the Mexican first division – América with its 10 championships, behind Chivas and its 11. Meetings between the two, which have become known as Super Clásicos, are played at least twice a year and signal a national derby. Having never been relegated to the league’s second division, they are the only two clubs to have been in the first division of the Mexican football league from the very beginning.

I really don’t have a problem with this, a top level team with a huge US fan base, besides without having away matches at home we may never find out how to win on the road. It sounds like this will be included with the 2009 Season Ticket package, with season ticket holders getting a chance to order more tickets before they go on sale to the public. This is all good and fine and should present me with a great chance to sell my seats in section 4 and make a few extra bucks in the process.

With RSL playing host to so many special events this season, this is just another one to add to the list that includes the 2009 MLS All Star Match, the US vs. El Salvador World Cup Qualifying match, and I am willing to bet one more surprise before the season is over. My hope is that we can put a productive team on the pitch for the match and play competitively against a top team.
