Real Salt Lake 6 - New England 0

OK, so I am still trying to wrap my mind around what I saw last night at Rio Tinto Stadium, so I am going to do this in 3 parts. First up is just posting the match recap as it came from Real Salt Lake and the audio from the post game press conference. Then later this afternoon I will post some pictures from the match, I had some technical issues so I am not sure how many quality photos I got from the match but I will be going through them shortly. Finally this evening I will be rewatching the match and posting my detailed review of the match.

All I can say is that early in the first half you had a feeling that something special was going to happen, despite all the other events going on (Jazz, Motocross, and Bees) and weather that leading up to the match was anything but fan friendly (rain and in the 40’s) there was a decent sized crowd, fewer than the announced 14,000 but the east side stands were full and the only really empty sections in the stadium were the KFC corner section. The match had a real feeling of excitement and the style of attacking play reminded me of the Chivas playoff match from last fall, RSL had several shots that were within a foot of ending up in the back of the net.

Anyhow more of that later here is the official post match recap:

REAL SALT LAKE REWRITES RECORD BOOKS IN 6-0 VICTORY OVER NEW ENGLAND

Six Different RSL Players Score in Second Half Barrage on Revolution Goal

Onslaught Helps RSL Become Third Team in MLS History to Notch Six Goals in One Half

SANDY, UTAH (Saturday, April 25, 2009) – When the rains stopped at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday evening, the deluge was just getting ready to begin, as Real Salt Lake set numerous franchise records and tied other MLS marks in a 6-0 drubbing of the previously undefeated New England Revolution in front of 14,051 fans in Sandy. After setting a frantic pace in the first half with nothing to show, Real Salt Lake (3-2-0, 9 pts.) would see six different players record goals on New England (2-1-2, 8 pts.) goalkeeper Brad Knighton after the interval, as DF Jamison Olave (53′), MF Clint Mathis (55′), FW Yura Movsisyan (70′), FW Luis Miguel Escalada (81′), MF Andy Williams (85′), and FW Robbie Findley (89′) helped RSL rewrite team and League record books.

  • Real Salt Lake bested its previous record for goals in a game with six tallies (previous record four, last hit in a 4-1 win over the Columbus Crew in its ‘09 Rio Tinto Stadium debut on April 2)
  • RSL shattered its previous mark for shots in a game with 29 (previous record was 24 on two occasions – Sept. 24, 2005 v. Columbus and June 18,2008 v. San Jose)
  • Tonight marked the third time in MLS’ 14-year history in which six goals were scored in a half, all three happening in the second half (Oct. 26, 2003, Columbus v. Chicago; Aug. 26, 2006, New York v. Real Salt Lake)
  • This was the lone game of the three in which all six goals were scored by different players
  • The only other MLS game ever in which six different teammates scored was Kansas City’s 6-1 win over Chicago on June 21, 1997 (Sean Bowers, Mark Chung, Frank Klopas, Preki, Edmundo Rodriguez, Paul Wright)

MLS POST-GAME QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2009
REAL SALT LAKE  6  :  0  NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION
RIO TINTO STADIUM – SANDY, UTAH

REAL SALT LAKE HEAD COACH JASON KREIS

On his team’s historic performance:

“I think it’s very rare in a professional athlete’s or a professional soccer player’s life to be part of a match like that. Where really almost everything that happens on our end was flawless for our team.  It just doesn’t happen often. We play so many games where we work so hard and you feel proud of what’s out there and just don’t get the result. For me tonight, there’s just so many storylines, it would be difficult to get them all. I do just want to take a moment to say that was awesome, fun to be a part of.”

On RSL’s first two goals off Javier Morales corner kicks:

“The service tonight, in particular from Javier Morales, was very, very good. [Jamison] Olave’s second goal of the season was very convincingly taken on the head. The second strike by Clint [Mathis], that’s just a wondergoal.”

On whether the goal for Yura Movsisyan could be a confidence booster:

“I hope so, because tonight he looked like a guy under a lot of pressure to score. He put himself into some fantastic positions, but then just looked a little confused when he got in around the goal, very indecisive.”

On RSL preserving the shutout:

“That’s what I mean when I say flawless. This is as close to flawless as I’ve ever been a part of, or ever seen. To not allow a goal was very, very good for us.”

On how RSL can take this mentality with it on the road:

“I think with a result like this it probably does give you a little extra step with you, a little extra swagger. I think we’re going to have to, as a staff, consider whether we ought to think about changing our mentality on the road.”

On the crowd tonight at Rio Tinto Stadium:

“I thought it was fantastic, I really do. Certainly we hope for more numbers, we’d like to sell more tickets, and have more people in the seats. I am a little disappointed with the attendance, but the passion that they bring, and the enthusiasm that they bring, and the noise level that they bring is phenomenal.”

REAL SALT LAKE MIDFIELDER CLINT MATHIS

On his 55th minute volley:

“I just mentioned to Javier [Morales] before that I noticed that they weren’t marking on the back post, to just to give a look and see if I could hit a volley. With all those people in there, if I could get in on frame you never know, it may bounce off of someone or anything like that. I was able to get a little bit of a better hit than that. It was just one of those things … it’s an easy strike after you look at it. I just got a good connection on it and hit it well and the ball did the rest of the work.”

On RSL’s dominant performance:

”I thought every guy was on top of their game. As far as the way we were organized and the way we played, it was one of those games where you can’t come in here and complain about anything. Everybody was really working hard, getting back on defense, our wing backs were getting forward and getting balls in. The train was definitely rolling today.”

On the last time he was involved in such an offensive outburst:

“It’s been awhile. It’s been a long time – too long to remember.”

REAL SALT LAKE FORWARD YURA MOVSISYAN

On the contest:

“It was a great game. It seemed like nobody could miss, except me! The way we controlled the middle was just unbelievable. It builds confidence, it builds everything for us. To play the way we did, just the way we kept the ball, it was an unbelievable game. Like Jason [Kreis] said, it was almost a perfect game.”

On whether his first goal of the year takes pressure off of him:

“I think only pressure from myself. I didn’t have pressure from my team or anybody, just myself. It was good, a good day. I knew it was going to come. For myself, I know if I get one, I’ll get a lot more. It was a perfect day for me. Today was the day I felt it. I found out that I was going to be a dad, so I knew it was the day I could do it.”

REAL SALT LAKE GOALKEEPER NICK RIMANDO

On RSL’s overall performance:

“I think we wanted to make a point. We were a little bit upset about the result at New York and coming home, we know we play well at home, and we wanted to give the fans a good show. We tightened up some stuff defensively – we’ve been letting in some goals that maybe we shouldn’t have – and tonight was a game where everybody contributed. We didn’t take a step back when guys came in (off the bench) and we kept on that same pace and we were dangerous tonight.”

On RSL’s defensive effort:

“The whole team played defense tonight, and that was a big thing. There were no mental mistakes. We should have had a couple goals in the first half, but came out of there with a zero. We came out in the second half and put the pressure on them.”

On whether he’s ever been a part of a performance like tonight’s:

“Not this dominant, no. Everything just seemed to be working tonight. Defensively the guys were in tune, and we kept possession the whole came. Guys were scoring, multiple guys, tons of guys scored tonight. Defensively, not only did we play defense but guys got forward, and together we got goals.”

REVOLUTION HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL

On the reasoning behind tonight’s result:

“Things caught up with us tonight. We’re banged up, we’re inexperienced, and we made mistakes all the way up the field.”

On the start to RSL’s scoring in the second half:

“The first goal was off a set piece; whoever attacks the ball wins the ball. And the second goal was a fantastic goal, there is nothing you can do about that.”

On seeing the floodgates open in the last 20 minutes:

“After the first two goals we showed our inexperience. Losing six to zero is never fun.”

REVOLUTION MIDFIELDER JEFF LARENTOWICZ

Overall thoughts on the match:

“We held up for the first 50 minutes. That’s what we have done for the first couple of weeks this year, and we have allowed no more than a goal a game or less. And then it happened, they scored six goals.”

On moving on from tonight’s result:

“All we can do is go up from here right? I mean, nobody has ever lost a championship in the sixth week. Everybody is a professional, everybody is going to come in and work hard this week.”

On if anything can be taken away from tonight’s match:

“There are no positives to take away from this game. The only thing we can take away from it is knowing that we have a game next week and everybody is professional and we’ve got to make the changes so that we don’t let it happen again.”

REVOLUTION MIDFIELDER WELLS THOMPSON

On the defeat:

“Anything can happen in these games. You can come back from two, three, four down that is not impossible. It is a tough loss. I think everybody in this locker room is pissed off, down, and a little bit embarrassed, so it will be nice to be back home and be fired up to come out against Houston.”

On what to take from the match:

“I think we can take something positive out of this. This might be one of the greatest things to happen to us this year to get our heads back on track and get focused on playing well and playing like a team.”

Post game press conference

Jason made some great comments, and there were some good questions from the group, the clip is about 7 minutes long.
