Key Stats
Nick Rimando-B+
Nick played every minute of the MLS season for RSL, there were a couple mistakes that kept Nick from getting an A. the defense was shaky early in the season but overall Nick provided great leadership for the defense
A 1.3 GAA and 8 clean sheets means that Nick ranked in the top 6 in MLS in both categories
Kyle Beckerman-B-
Kyle played in all 30 MLS matches, and played a number of positions. He was the captain most of the season and a solid force on the pitch. He had a number of big matches where he simply disappeared and wasn’t a factor but still a very solid season
3 Goals, 2 Assists, 45 shots, 22 shots on goal
38 fouls committed, 45 fouls suffered, 5 cautions
Nat Borchers-B
Nat came into the season with high expectations and he delivered great results, but had a couple lapses with Rimando that cost two goals and 4 points. That is the difference between 3rd and 2nd place. Nat failed to pose a real offensive threat on set pieces.
1 Assist, 13 Shots, 1 shot on goal
24 fouls committed, 10 fouls suffered, and 4 cautions
Chris Wingert-B-
Chris did an excellent job in pushing forward into the attack, while not getting beaten on his defensive responsibility.
Chris still lacks the expected quality on crossing the ball.
3 Assists, 10 shots, 5 shots on goal
23 fouls committed, 14 fouls suffered, 4 cautions, 1 ejection
Javier Morales-B
Javi was clearly the teams MVP, and should have been a MLS All Star, he often provided a creative offensive threat that RSL has lacked in the midfield.
There were matches where Javi allowed opposing defenders and midfielder to limit his number of touches, and that impacted the entire team. Javi seems to be more comfortable with some players, but as the number 10 he must play well with all players
6 goals, 15 Assists (2nd in MLS), 48 shots, 23 shots on goal
49 fouls committed (4th in MLS), 59 fouls suffered (5th in MLS), and 3 cautions
Jamison Olave-A-
I didn’t know what to expect when we signed Olave, and early in the year the language barrier prevented Jamison from being as effect as he later proved to be. Once the language barrier was removed, Olave quickly earned the respect of many players in the league becoming a force in the RSL backline. He also proved to be a great target on set pieces.
2 Goals, 10 Shots, 4 shots on goal
33 fouls committed, 17 fouls suffered, and 9 cautions(tied for 2nd in MLS, 1st on RSL)
Dema Kovalenko-B+
Not too many people get mad when they are hurt and can’t go to work, but Dema was upset when he was injured and couldn’t play. That is the kind of heart and passion that RSL needs to foster in players.
Dema was solid both at D-mid and when playing on the wings
He is an absolute bulldog on the pitch
1 Goal, 2 Assists, 25 shots, and
5 shots on goal
30 fouls committed, 23 fouls suffered, and 7 cautions
Andy Williams-A+
Given everything that Andy has gone through this season off the pitch, and the standards that Coach Kreis set for him in the preseason. Andy not only proved to be a value on the pitch but an incredible inspiration off it. His level of play improved so much that he was back on the Jamaican National team as they try to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Even when not starting Andy provided an offensive spark anytime he was on the pitch.
1 Goal, 3 Assists, 41 shots, and 10 shots on goal
28 fouls committed, 23 fouls suffered
Kenny Deuchar-D
I thought Kenny would have not only a huge impact on RSL but that he would be a leading scorer in MLS, well that didn’t happen. Now not all the blame can be placed on Kenny, we simply didn’t have anyone who could play quality balls into the box for him to get a head on. We didn’t find enough ways to take advantage of his skill. Kenny did prove to be a very hard worker, not only where expected on offense but also on defensive responsibilities. But if he is to stay with the team much, much more has to be delivered.
3 Goals, 2 Assists, 41 shots, and 18 shots on goal
29 fouls committed, 30 fouls suffered
Robbie Findley-C
Robbie started the season playing very well, and ended the season as a solid off the bench option. I do think that the disappointment of not making the US Olympic team hurt his confidence and that reflected to his performance in MLS. Robbie has the speed needed to be a special player for RSL and while his production was good, I believe he is capable of more. He has to work on his first touch and ball control in order to become a major force at striker in MLS
6 Goals, 5 Assists, 44 shots, and 18 shots on goal
16 fouls committed, 27 fouls suffered
Ian Joy-C+
Ian fought some injuries but when he was on the pitch he made a huge positive impact. His ability to attack up the wings proved to be valuable, he does need to improve on the quality of balls played into the box but he is fan favorite due to his never say die attitude. I expect even more from Ian next season on the offensive end
0 Goals, 0 Assists, 3 shots, and 1 shot on goal
26 fouls committed, 8 fouls suffered, 4 cautions, and 1 ejection
Yura Movsisyan-B+
Yura simply has shown up in the biggest matches at the biggest times over the last couple months and for a player who struggled with his touch and injuries early in the season, Yura proved to be a difference maker over the last two months for RSL.
Yura has benefitted from playing on grass where he seems much more comfortable and he seems to be on the edge of becoming a real star in MLS. At 21 his future is really, really bright
7 goals, 1 Assist, 69 shots, and 33 shots on goal
11 fouls committed, 20 fouls suffered, 0 cautions
Tony Beltran-B-
Tony made an impact as a rookie, by being able to fill in on defense when injuries or suspension kept others out of the starting line up. His play was solid and his pace allowed him to get forward and be part of the attack as well as provide great coverage on defense. He will continue to develop and has the potential to be a future starter for RSL
0 Goals, 1 Assist, 4 shots, and 0 shots on goal
11 fouls committed, 10 fouls suffered, 1 caution
Will Johnson-A-
Will is a dynamic player who joined RSL for the final third of the MLS season and made an impact from the first match on. His speed and determination proved to be a huge spark in the midfield over the final nine matches of the season, RSL was 3-2-4 during that stretch and has one of the highest percentage of shots being on goal.
Will is going to be another cornerstone of RSL moving forward.
2 Goals, 0 Assists, 17 shots, and 10 shots on goal
10 fouls committed, 13 fouls suffered, 2 cautions
Robbie Russell-B
Robbie may be the nicest guy on the RSL roster and the hype about him being able to play almost any position turned out to be fact as he filled in at a number of positions over the last half of the season earning 7 starts. His pace and ability make him a huge asset on defense and you can see he has a creative side as well when he move forward on the wing or is playing in the midfield. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the future plans of RSL
0 Goals, 0 Assists, 6 shots, and 2 shots on goal
6 fouls committed(fewest of players with more than 500 minutes), 3 fouls suffered, and
1 caution
Fabian Espindola-C-
Espindola may be the most talented of the RSL strikers, but injuries plagued his season and when he was healthy, a mistaken celebration flip put him back on the injured list. Fabi was involved in less than 25% of match time, and he has to find a way to be able to provide a more dependable effort for RSL. Expectations were high and when he played he often delivered, but too many injuries force me to say the 2008 season was a disappointment for Fabi
5 Goals, 0 Assists, 25 shots, and 17 shots on goal
11 fouls committed, 10 fouls suffered, and 1 caution
Clint Mathis-C-
I can say that I am actually pleasantly pleased with the effort Clint has put out since rejoining RSL. His attitude has changed and his commitment to getting fit and playing hard is better than I have seen in years. He has had a couple opportunities for goals and assists but the chances have not ended in results. Clint is working hard at creating chances and forcing midfielders and defenders pay close attention to him. I still believe that before the season is over for RSL that we might see Clint get a goal
0 Goals, 0 Assists, 12 shots, and 3 shots on goal
7 fouls committed, 1 foul suffered, and 2 cautions
Team-B
While RSL suffered a tough stretch coming out of the break after the All Star match, overall the performance was good. Despite having 20 of 28 faces new from the start of the 2007 season, they worked hard together and became a team. My expectation early on was that they would end with 42 points, they ended just 2 points shy of that. I thought they would make the playoffs and they did. I expect that they will make it to the Western Conference final, and we will find out this weekend if that is true
