Can RSL make fans forget?

It is often said that winning makes everything easier to swallow, well RSL fans have been choking down a lot of losses, a lot of disappointments, and this week many got a huge increase in the cost of their season tickets as the team prepares to move to their new stadium. When your ticket price jumps over $400 bucks per seat, and your team is sitting in second to last place (something that is very common for RSL fans), it can be enough to push you over the edge. Perhaps the timing could not be better for RSL, they have four of their next five matches at home, a place where they have not lost a match all season. But wait, it gets even better, two of those home matches are against San Jose (the only team worse than RSL so far this season), so a couple wins at home and RSL can move up the standings, and ease the pain in the wallet that fans are feeling. It really is interesting that the relocation event starts the Monday after that 4^th home game in three weeks, it may be the smartest thing the RSL staff has done in a very long time, but likely they didn’t plan it at all. OK, on to the match at hand.

San Jose comes to RES for the second time this season (first was a 4-0 defeat in a LHUSOC match), and they do so without a number of key players: Ayres, Glinton, and Peguero Jean Philippe are all out to injuries, Kamara, and Guerrero are both gone for national team duties. San Jose did pick up Jovan Kirovski, and Kelly Gray from Colorado, for keeper Preston Burpo. They also signed Amir Lowery and Dan Benton. Will any of this help San Jose, I doubt it, there number one issue has been scoring they have only put 6 balls into the back of the net all season, and while Kirovski has proven he can score goals (24 in his 4 seasons in MLS), it is not enough he scores one goal for every 345 minutes of playing time, or one goal every four matches, simply not enough to lift San Jose from their scoring woes. Will Ryan Johnson live up to the “former RSL player” curse? Atibia, and Esky both put in goals when they faced RSL earlier in the season, and I would not be surprised if Johnson did the same thing tonight.

RSL has been decent at home, granted they blew leads late against Chicago and the Galaxy, but both matches could have been wins. Ian Joy is out on a red card suspension, Movsisyan and Sturgis are both still out with injuries, as Espindola, Morales, and Olave are all expected to play but have ongoing injuries. The question is how much confidence can RSL have after getting outplayed against the Rapids a couple weeks ago, and last week giving up two late goals to snatch a road win against Dallas from their grasp? Can the RSL defense shut down the struggling Quake offense? Will RSL start to get balls into the box for Deuchar to finish? Can Williams, Morales, Beckerman, and Kovalenko control the midfield and help RSL dictate the pace of the match? There are so many questions, will this be the match we get some positive answers, I think so. I am going to pick a 3-1 RSL victory as we continue good form at home.

More about who isn’t playing than who is

The matchup between TFC and the LA Galaxy is really more about what players will not be playing, for TFC the list is long with both international duty and suspensions: Robinson, Sutton, Guevara, and Robert all are gone for this match, and Marshall and Dichio both are nursing injuries. The LA side doesn’t get much better as Beckham and Jazic are out on international duty, Vagenas is nursing an injury, and does anyone really know what is going on with Landycakes? He goes to England, but fails the fitness test, he is not listed as a starter in this match, has travelled a lot this week, and has the USMNT match with Spain in a couple days, so will he play or not? I am going to think he may be a second half sub, but LA without a healthy Donovan, and without Beck’s is not a very good team, they may be getting Ruiz back, but his form can’t be up to par after spending so much time out with injuries and now playing with a bunch of guys he hasn’t had a lot of playing time with.

I think TFC takes advantage, most of their defense is there, they can bring in a striker like Jeff Cunningham, and they still have Edu and Ricketts in the midfield. I have to think that will be enough to beat LA, so this one will be a 2-1 victory for Toronto FC.

The match almost no one will see

Another HDNet exclusive (which means less than 15% of people can see it, and in this case it may not be a bad thing) will feature the second match of the week for the Dynamo as they face off with the New York Red Bulls, and add in the fact that they will be without DeRo and Onstad for international duty, and Robinson for a red card, plus Barrett still most likely out with an injury, and things don’t look good for Houston. On the Red Bull side, the only real impact is Stammler is still nursing an injury, but expected to play. I have been waiting all season for the Red Bulls to click as a team, but on the heels of one of the ugliest beat downs in MLS history (1-5 loss to Chicago), can they recover? It is hard to believe a team with such offensive power as Jozy Altidore, Juan Pablo Angel at forward, and Van der Bergh and Borman in the midfield, and a fairly solid defense, have struggled as much as they have. I think this match will be a great chance for the Red Bulls to rebound and find some form, I pick them to win this one 2-1.

MLS Rematch of the Year (so far)

The last time Chivas and the Crew met it was considered by many to be the best MLS match this season, a 4-3 victory for the Crew on their home pitch, but the rematch is going to be played at the Home Depot Center, and the focus of the league may be more on the action in the stands than it is on what happens on the pitch. Chivas has had issues with the supporter groups, including banning members from matches for violent behavior, but not to be out done, the Crew have become the center of some controversy as fans were videotaped making racial taunts during a recent home match against New England. So both clubs have become shining examples of the wrong types of behavior in the stands.

On the pitch Chivas is more like a hospital than a soccer team, they have varying states of injuries to the following players: Bornstein, Eskandarian, Galindo, Vaughn, Wicky, Sotinca, Suarex, and Thomas, heck that is a nice core of a team. While Columbus doesn’t have a lot of injuries, they will be without their anchor as Frankie Hejduk serves a red card suspension. I simply think Columbus will be trying to get the focus on the pitch and not the stands and with Robbie Rogers becoming a star in MLS, it will prove too much for the goats as Columbus picks up a 2-1 win on the road.

Showdown in the West

So FC Dallas sits in second, and Colorado sits in third and both are within three points of first place Galaxy in the Western Conference race, so this match up has a lot of implications for both sides. FC Dallas is coming into their third match in eight days and they are 1-0-1 in the previous two matches, but they will be without a couple key pieces to their roster, as Adrian Serioux is on international duty, Andre Rocha is on a red card suspension, and Wagenfuhr and McCarty are both out with injuries, Rocha is the teams leader in assists. Colorado is without their number one keeper Bouna Coundoul who is on national team duty, and have a number of players nursing injuries (they have had this problem all year), Mastronei, Burciaga, DiRaimondo, and Petke. I am tempted to pick Dallas in a road upset, but I get a feeling this one will end up as a 1-1 draw.

So today when I got home I received my official 2009 season ticket relocation guide, and before I even opened it I noticed a couple of huge issues:

First, why in the hell would they schedule a time for me on a Wednesday at 10:00am, do they not realize that most people with the money to buy season tickets have jobs?

Second, I sure thought my priority number would be lower than it is (#567 for those who care), but out of 4,632, I am at least in the top 15%.

Third, and this will be the killer is the price increase issues, if you currently sit in E35, 36, or 37 then your ticket price will jump from $485 to $900. This is far too high and will lead to a number of people downgrading their seats, which will in turn cause people with good seats in other price ranges to get worse seats due to more people being in their section. If that has you upset, just wait because if you look closely at the image below, you will notice that every front row seat (except those in the premium seats) is the same color as the $900 seats.

I have sent a couple emails to the front office to see if this is a misprint or if all front row seats will be $900 a pop. As soon as I hear back, I will post their response.

Fourth, I also noticed that they had no problem creating and posting on the map a Family/Kids Section (per the guide, “in sections 32 and 33 alcoholic beverages will not be permitted. Gameday staff will be on hand to enforce these policies”

Why is it that they could not indicate the supporter section, I have been told by GM Garth Lagerwey and other RSL staff members that all supporter groups will be moved to sections 6 &7, but no mention of that on the stadium map. Are they once again trying to piss of their fans by not letting them know in advance where the supporter groups will be located, I mean honestly the RSL staff have been asked to do this for the last 3 seasons, and they continue to not do it, and they continue to sell tickets and place people in or near the supporters, who are annoyed by the standing, the drums, the occasional language issues. Here they had a perfect chance to get in front of this issue, but nope one more dropped ball.

Fifth, another thing all fans need to be aware of is that while not all seats have huge price increases, the number of events that your season ticket purchase will cover has dropped from 21 this season, to 18 for next season. Also noted in the General Seats is that your seat will cover “select international exhibition home games”, yup wanna bet they try to charge you for next seasons Real Madrid match? Is that the real reason for the cancelled match this year? Am I the only one who smells something very strange in all these events?

Sixth, I also noticed that while the premium seats get “exclusive opportunity to purchase seats for other events prior to public sale”, no such benefit will be given to other season ticket holders; you need to spend at least $1250 a seat to get that right.

I will be honest, none of this surprises me, nope I expected as much. Here was a chance for an organization that has by their own admission delivered an “inferior” product for the last 4 years, and adds into that the revelation that a promised match against Real Madrid this summer is now cancelled, but they simply do not get it. All the issues above pale in comparison to expecting fans to renew their season tickets in June for a team that currently is one point above expansion club San Jose at the bottom of MLS, and depending on the result tomorrow, could be once again at the very bottom of the MLS pile.

Open Letter to RSL leadership

Mr. Checketts, Mr. Manning, Mr. Lagerwey,

Each of you owe the fans better, you owe us better on the pitch, and based on the issues raised above you owe us better in the new stadium. Prices are higher than those of two time defending MLS Champions Houston Dynamo, as well as being higher than the Colorado Rapids, who moved into a new stadium last season. You all need to honestly evaluate what you are asking RSL fans to do, pay more for a product that by your own admissions is not of the quality deserved.

Simple things like scheduling the relocation sessions during most fans work hours, during the week instead of using the evening hours, which may be more inconvenient to RSL staff, but would be much better for most fans. Failure to consider the real interest of the fans is nothing new from the organization, but I know myself and others had hoped that the move to a new stadium, one controlled by the organization would bring improvements. It now looks like not only are we not going to get improvements, but once again the fans are made to felt obligated to the whims of the organization.

Well as a fan that has missed a total of two matches over the past four seasons, as a fan that increased my season tickets from one to two on the hopes of a better season on the pitch, and desire to secure my part of the new stadium, as a fan that helped establish a relationship between my employer (one of the largest in the valley) and RSL, I have to say “enough”. I will be considering long and hard if I really want to shell out the increased price, for less products (15% fewer event tickets), and for a product that continues to be inferior on the pitch. I can not with any confidence recommend RSL as a wise sports purchase, the pricing of $900 seats on the east side, and what appears on the new stadium map to be the price of all front row seats, is simply no longer worth my entertainment dollars.

I hope that between now and that actual start of the relocation event in three weeks that you all will consider what impact your decisions in regards to the new stadium will have on the fans that have been so supportive over the past four seasons. Please take this time and ask yourself what you are asking your fans to commit to, and then ask yourself if you have delivered what you have promised in the past. I do not believe that you can honestly answer anything positive to either question, and that should lead you do make a number of changes to show your dedication to the fans is worthy of their dedication to RSL.

Real Salt Lake return home to take on the San Jose Earthquakes with both teams looking to start the climb back up the Western Conference standings. With just one win in their last six games, both of Real’s victories have come at Rice-Eccles Stadium, last three weeks ago against FC Dallas. The Earthquakes put an end to their four-game winless streak last week, defeating Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium in an emotional night for their first home victory since their return to the league.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced that they have placed forward Peguero Jean Philippe on the season-ending injury list and defender Jay Ayres on the six-week disabled list. The two players are now not currently on the Earthquakes active 18-man roster.

Nine days after the San Jose Earthquakes claimed their first home win, the team travels to Real Salt Lake Saturday to play a team unbeaten at home.

Last Thursday against the Dynamo, San Jose was temporarily relieved of its offensive struggles, resulting in their third two-goal game of the season. Unfortunately, the Quakes have not scored in any other game. The Quakes’ measly six goals are by far the least of any team. No other side has netted less than ten. This has pushed the Quakes into a last place spot in the Western Conference. Many predicted the expansion Earthquakes would have paltry offensive production.

United look to keep their winning ways going

DC United fresh off their 3-2 win at home over TFC play their 3^rd game in 8 days as they travel north to face the Revolution, but New England has a share of first place and a win tonight would put pressure on Chicago and Columbus to have to keep pace with them. Let’s face some basic facts, first DC United is better than their record and have traditionally been slow starters, second New England is always one of the top teams in the East. So this really is a match between two powerhouse teams with a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, it should be an exciting match, but I am going to pick a 2-2 draw.

Dallas falls victim to last minute goal

Turnabout is fair play and I have to admit even with my pick for Dallas to win 2-1, I was very happy to see them give up a 93^rd minute goal and have to settle for a 2-2 draw. It seems not only can FCD score in extra time, but they can give up goals as well, I did smile as DeRo evened the score.

Over the last 5 days a lot has happened since someone posted a video of an anonymous Columbus Crew fan hurling racist epithets at an African player for the New England Revolution. We decided that rather than shy away from the story we’d report everything we could find out about the incident and any linkage between Crew fans and organized hate groups after someone sent us some artwork for a band associated with Nazism that had a striking resemblance to a Crew supporter’s logo.

I would like to think that this type of crap would not happen in MLS, but it does and will, MLS and clubs must step up and take action. The sad part is that this will be used by some to try and censor a lot of speech at soccer matches, those who find anything objectionable will say that it will lead to this type of behavior. Some will say this is what happens when you serve alcohol at sporting events, others will say this and recent events at Toronto matches, should lead the league to crack down on supporter groups. I think this is a call for supporter groups to do a much better job of policing themselves, something far too few of them do. What is the line that can be drawn? Can the “… has herpes” be seen as too far over the line? How about the famous “wings of an eagle” chant? I say no, but I do think a line can be drawn at anything racial, or threatening violence, fans will have to decide on issues like the F-bomb, sexually suggestive chants, and others that may be deemed “over the line”. One thing is sure if the fans do not control the behavior in the stands the teams, stadium staff, and league will, and that is something that no fan should be wanting.

The new FC Dallas stand-in head coach, Marco Feruzzi, will certainly be feeling that way after seeing his side come from behind thanks to two late strikes by super-sub Dominic Oduoro to snatch all three points at home to a decent Real Salt Lake team, coached by former Dallas standout Jason Kreiss.

Revolution’s last minute salvation

So on a call that I call questionable, I did not see a lot of contact, but rather more a player losing his balance a battle between two of the powerhouses of the Eastern Conference ended in controversy. A battle that saw both teams take over a dozen shots, a lot of good chances and some nice saves, ended on what has to be one of the most entertaining goals of the season. Steve Ralston goes down, on a “foul”, and New England is issued a PK in the 89^th minute, but they are facing Will Hesmer who has made a number of PK saves already this season 3 of the 4 he has faced, stopped the shot by Shalrie Joseph but it deflected out and Kheli Dube took advantage to put the ball into the back of the net and New England picks up 3 points as they win 1-0 to hand the Crew their first home loss. As three teams in the East have 19 points but Chicago takes the lead on goal differential.

Midweek rematch, different result

TFC had to travel to RFK Stadium and face off against DC United, a team they had beat in a midweek battle. TFC struck first on a Dichio goal in the 13^th minute and it looked like it would be a repeat of the mid week match, but DC United continued to attack and had several shots on goal, but they finally took advantage of 41^st minute corner kick to draw even with the team from Canada as Peralta had a diving header to put the ball into the back of the net. Toronto wasn’t done and in stoppage time of the first half Danny D, would strike again, this time a clear shot from the top of the box went straight into the back of the net as TFC retook the lead 2-1 as the half ended. DC United all season at this point would have packed it up and simply quit fighting, as demonstrated by their 2 wins and 10 goals going into this match, but perhaps they have finally found what has been missing. United would get back in this match on a stupid foul in the box by Wynne and we know what happens for DC when they get a penalty kick, yup Mr. Cheap Goals Jamie Moreno gets his 116^th goal to further extend his all time MLS goal lead. As the smoke was still rising from Bara Brava, United struck again as Sutton could not hold onto a shot from distance and the rebound found the foot of Emilio who had no problem finishing to give United the 3-2 win.

Fire catch fire and take over first

Chicago was red hot on Sunday as they went to the Big Apple to face off against the Red Bulls who should have been drinking some Red Bull. The attack started early as the Fire got their first goal in the 8^th minute, and they never looked back. Chicago was attacking the whole match, and despite a dive from Blanco in the box as he tried to get a PK, the Fire were the far superior team leading in shots, shots on goal and goals. All told Chicago would put 5 on the scoreboard to New York’s 1, in what was one of the most one sided matches since the two RSL vs. United matches this year.

Galaxy continue to impress

So LA has taken over sole possession of first place in the West on their back to back wins over FC Dallas and then last weekend over KC, a match that was covered on HDNet, so I did not see the match. Goals from Landycakes, Buddle, and Beckham gave LA their 3 goals, while KC scored first on a goal from Claudio Lopez it simply wasn’t enough.

Rivals match up

So when Chivas traveled to Colorado to face off against the Rapids, the best thing that could happen for RSL fans, would be if both teams could find a way to lose the match, since that can’t happen our next best hope would be a draw, something these teams do more often than winning or losing when they face off in the Mile High City. I have this match on DVR, but have not had a chance to watch it yet. I may post a more detailed review later, but I wouldn’t count on it. This one ended with the goat’s picking up a 2-1 win.

RSL blows it

So I am going to place the blame for the 2-1 loss at Dallas on two people, first on Jason Kreis for making an ill advised substitution in the 77^th minute, and second on Matias Mantilla the player that was brought on. The first half was tight with Dallas getting the better of chances but great plays by Borchers and Olave, along with saves by Rimando keep the scoreboard 0-0. RSL was forced to play with 10 men after Ian Joy got his second yellow card of the match in the 38^th minute. The second foul was clear but not a yellow card offense and the end result was that RSL which had struggled for offense on the road would have to try to get a win with just 10 men. In the second half it was only a couple minutes in before the match would take another turn do to a red card, as Bobby Rhine was shown a straight red for a foul on Morales. Both teams then struggled for a bit to figure out how they would play with the sides now even at 10 men each.

Jason made a good move by brining in Espindola for a struggling Findley which sparked the offensive efforts, but it was followed by a very strange move to bring in Kenny Cutler for Kenny Deuchar with the score tied at 0-0 in the 54^th minute. It appeared to be in response to Dallas getting more attacking chances; the end result was that RSL was able to take advantage of a great pass from Morales played through the Dallas defense and to the feet of Fabian who put it far post past a diving Sala to give RSL their first lead in a road match this season. RSL bunkered back as Dallas stepped up their attack in an attempt to respond to the RSL goal, and Dallas continued to play long balls into the box trying to connect with Kenny Cooper or Dominic Oduro (who came on in the 65^th minute), they also took advantage of RSL’s weak defense on the wings (as so many other teams have done), but Olave and Borchers were there to protect the RSL lead. But then come the mistakes that cost RSL three points on the road; it was a hot, humid night in Dallas and all the players on both sides looked very tired by the 75^th minute. Jason chose to pull Olave out and bring in Mantilla, despite the fact that Olave had been a stud all night long. Within 5 minutes Dallas took advantage and played a long ball into the box that this time found the head of Oduro (I will have to take a real close look at the replay but he may have been offside), but either way he had lost both of the central midfielders (it looks like a mistake on Borchers part as he was the man closest to Dominic) and put the ball past Rimando to tie the match.

As the clock hit 90:00, the score was 1-1, but as RSL history will attest to that doesn’t mean much, and even more so against Dallas. Sure enough, it was in the 91^st minute as RSL instead of playing their guys back to protect the draw on the road, had Mantilla all the way up near midfield, and Rocha took advantage of the out of place defense and played a long ball over the top to an onrushing Oduro, and the birdman beat Borchers and Dema could not recover quickly enough to get in the way of the shot as it went past Nick to give Dallas a win that they deserved. They took more shots (16 to 8), had more shots on goal (7-2), and simply took advantage of the mistakes by the RSL defense which had played so well up to the 77^th minute.

I still think Jason will make a good coach, but perhaps he needs to spend some time as an assistant first, I am sure fatigue lead Olave coming off, but this is professional soccer and he should have been able to go 13 more minutes, when your protecting a lead on the road pull an offensive player to get some fresh defensive legs, but don’t bring in a cold player to spell a hot player. With the recent announcement of Real Madrid not coming, perhaps we should consider some drastic changes? I say we offer Bruce Arena a real challenge as RSL’s new head coach, he has shown the ability to lead teams both in MLS and at an international level, it has to be better than doing color for the Wizards. I understand we are not a major market, but with a new stadium, a DP spot to use, and some good talent on our roster, brining in a “proven” coach may be the only thing to prevent another season of less than acceptable results.

Sorry Jason, I have to embrace the honest truth, and in a year while RSL’s play may be better (most of the time), and the talent level is improved, we simply have not shown the ability to take advantage of either. Saturday against San Jose in our 10^th match of the season, a win can raise us no further than fourth in the West. We have five other home matches before the All Star break; we need a result in each of them and at least 4 wins from the six matches in order to have 22 points. Considering that after the break we have a total of five home games the rest of the season, we will need to get some points on the road and after last weekends performance that is something we will be hard pressed to do. Given the fact that we continue to struggle to get our offensive issues worked out, we have not figured out how to use Kenny Deuchar (hint see how Dallas uses Cooper, duh). Our defense continues to leak like a sieve, despite all the upgrades. Our midfield has got issues as we continue to use players that are more defensive in their playing style in a majority of midfield roles, when our options are down to using Kenny Cutler (a hell of a nice guy), it is a sure sign that we need to improve our roster, perhaps a healthy Nathan Sturgis will help (but he will most likely be gone for a large portion of July and August).

Is it time to finally cut the half million dollar mistake called Nik Besagno? Yes, if you include his earning for this year Nik has made over half a million dollars for 440 minutes of total playing time, I know that a majority of that has been paid as part of the Generation Adidas project, but please it is either time for him to step up and become a player or time for us to send him on his way and let someone else figure it out. Perhaps a trade to Chivas, the new home of the RSL cast offs? Is it time to find ourselves a DP?

I have tried to be supportive this season, and I do see moments where RSL looks like a much improved side over years past, I do think the talent on the roster is better than it has ever been in RSL history, but the only real measure that matters is results on the scoreboard. No team has fewer wins than RSL this season, only one team (expansion San Jose) has fewer points, and it will take a huge effort in the final 2/3’s of the season to even get into the playoff race. I think it is possible, but unless the team begins to respond to Jason better, I have to start to look for a change in on field leadership.

Sorry for the lack of posts, it has been a very busy weekend and start to a new week. I will do a couple posts this evening and tomorrow morning, since I have a few matches from the weekend to watch, along with the US vs. England match, and tonight’s matchup between the Dynamo and F*C* Dallas.

Battle of Texas

So as Houston heads north to face off with Dallas, they are coming off a defeat at the hands of San Jose, while Dallas is coming off a come from behind beat down of RSL. This will probably be an interesting match since the four meetings in Dallas have ended up with each team having a win and two ties. I am going to pick Dallas to win, on the strength of one fact, in the only previous match that Kenny Cooper has played in between these two teams at Dallas he had two shots, both on goal, and both in the back of the goal. Dallas loves to play the long ball over the top, and use the wings to get balls into their strikers (just ask RSL’s defense about this), and I think they will put up a 2-1 victory.
